Diplomatic History. The Department of History at The Ohio State University offers graduate programs in U.S. diplomatic history and European international history leading to both the M.A. and the Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students take reading and research seminars in their major fields of U.S. diplomatic history or European international history.
This is the third segment of the Introduction to American History readings seminar required of all M.A. and Ph.D. students in US History. Ph.D. students are required to take two out of the three courses in this sequence. M.A. students must take any one of the three segments.
Research in History is characterised by its breadth and diversity. The interests of our staff and PhD students span the medieval, early modern and modern periods, encompassing political, social, cultural, economic, military and diplomatic history, and ranging geographically across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Writing your research proposal The purpose of the research proposal is to demonstrate that the research you wish to undertake is significant, necessary and feasible, that you will be able to make an original contribution to the field, and that the project can be completed within the normal time period.
I am prepared to supervise graduate students in a number of areas—eighteenth and nineteenth-century American history generally, and the political, diplomatic, cultural, intellectual, and religious history of the early American republic more specifically.

Biography: Harry Mace is a PhD candidate in Modern European History at Girton College, Cambridge. Harry's thesis explores, for the first time, the diplomatic masculinities and gender identities of serving personnel in the British Diplomatic Service throughout the second half of the twentieth century.
History, Theory and Practice of Diplomacy Students on this module will consider the value of historical perspectives for the theory and practice of diplomacy. After an introduction to the field of diplomatic history and its relationship to theoretical approaches to the subject, students will then study the key organs involved in the practise of diplomacy, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
